NEW ELECTRIC WHEELCHAIR FROM COL DR LEW CHEE KONG FOR MACVA PATIENTS MOBILITY ASSISTANCE (MPMA)
19 Oct 20
It was a pleasant surprise to receive a text message from Col Dr Lew Chee Kong at 10.39am on a Sunday morning. The last time Col Dr Lew texted me was in August 2020 on his membership. I thought it was the same matter. I was taken aback to read his text message. Below are the text messages:
a. 10.39am - from Col Dr Lew “Hi good morning Col Wong, I have a motorised wheel chair (electric), meant for my mother, but not used at all. How to send to you for anyone that needs it?”
b. 10.47am - my reply “TQVM Sir. I will inform our MPMA founder Richard Lye Wah to get in touch with you. God bless.”
c. 10.50am - Col Dr Lew’s text message C&P to Richard Lye ”from our member Col Dr Lew Chee Kong. Please get in touch with Col Dr Lew.”
d. 10.51am - Col Dr Lew’s mobile number texted to Richard Lye ”Please take a few photos for our website. Tq”
e. 5.59pm - Richard Lye’s message “Col, just collected the elect. w/chair from Col Dr Lew in PJ. Best regards to you”
f. 7.08pm - “TQVM Richard. Very kind of you. Very nice wheelchair. Must be quite costly.”
g. 7.19pm - from Richard Lye “Yes, it is a very good unit however will hv to look into the condition of the battery. Will keep you inform. Tks again”
The above text messages are meant to highlight the speed which is the essence when dealing with medical matters. Richard Lye, a veteran from the Medical Corps up-hold the motto and made arrangement with Col Dr Lew to collect the wheelchair the same day in the evening.
A quote from Richard Lye Wah “One day of delay in providing a medical equipment to a needy is one extra day of suffering by the needy”
On behalf of the President and members of MACVA, our profound thank you to Col Dr Lew Chee Kong for his generosity in donating the electric wheelchair to MPMA and also our thank you to Richard Lye Wah for sacrificing.

For the information of MACVA members, MPMA was officially formed on 25 October 2019 with Brig Gen Dr Leong Weng Foon as the Advisor. It was initially named as Patients Mobility Assistance when founded by Richard Lye Wah, a veteran from the Medical Corps. During the MACVA Management Meeting on 25 October 2019 it was agreed to name it to be MACVA Patients Mobility Assistance (MPMA). The tied up with MACVA is to give the outfit a better recognition and at the same time to enhance the image of MACVA in its welfare assistance to members and other deserving veterans. MACVA Welfare CM Lim Wai Fah was appointed to be the co-ordinator of MPMA during the Meeting.
The MPMA is co-located at the warehouse of the Charity Food Basket Society Klang founded by Mr Chew Song Kong. The equipment provided on loan to veterans with no charges are as follows:
1. Hospital beds (Electric and non-electric operated)
2. Wheelchairs (electric and non-electric operated)
4. Walking sticks
5. Other medical equipment on needs basis
The equipment are mostly donated and some are purchased. As at today, MPMA has loaned 6 hospital beds (two electric beds), 4 wheelchairs (one electric wheelchair) and other equipment to members and non-members. The hallmark of MPMA is the speed in the delivery of equipment to the needy. The delivery takes not more than 3 days upon received of the request. For wheelchair and walker it is normally delivered or collected by the rep on the same day. This welfare service by MACVA is unprecedented among the Malaysian veterans associations. MACVA is very thankful to Richard Lye who initiated the offer.
MACVA has established a MPMA sub-branch at the Northern Chapter to cater for our members. It is our hope that this non-profit MPMA can be strongly supported by members, non-members and the private corporations. Effort will be made to approach JHEV to offer MPMA to be the interim supplier of equipment to needy veterans while waiting for their applications to be approved by JHEV. A small fee will be imposed on each equipment on loan to JHEV. The fees will be used to buy additional equipment or for repairs of the equipment.
